This is always an interesting time. I want to share a special moment from the 2012 Stellar Awards.
Some of the things that happen with the artists backstage are pretty spectacular. This story is centered around a girl name Angelique (Angel) Rocker, 17 and Kirk Franklin.
Angel is a 17 year-old quadriplegic who is unable to see or speak but is stimulated by gospel music. Angel’s mother, Deidra Rocker, shared that the Stellar Awards was the first concert that Angel was able to stay until the end. Deidra, that’s because the Stellar Awards is more than a concert; it is a ministry. Stay on topic Erma.
The Dreams Come True Foundation asked if we would provide tickets for Angel and her family to attend the Stellar Awards – of course we did. According to Angel’s mother, Kirk Franklin’s music has “brought her back” several times. I told Kirk about Angel and asked if he would speak with her and take some pictures with her. Kirk said “bring her backstage and I will wait however long it takes”. I am tearing up thinking about Kirk’s response.
It took awhile to get Angel backstage but we got it done and there was Kirk waiting to meet this very special person – Angel. Angel’s mother, began to tell Kirk how his music “brought her back” many times. When Angel’s health was failing, her mother would play Kirk’s music and Angel’s body would respond favorably over and over again. Angel loved meeting Kirk Franklin and her favorite song she listens to over and over is “Lean on Me”.
This is just one example of how music is more than entertainment, it is a ministry. I am sure that many artists have no idea of the impact of their music. Kirk, you are blessed to know that your music can lift spirits “bring people back”. Kirk, keep doing what you are doing; letting God work through you.
That’s all for now. I invite you to share some of your special moments with us.
